A customised Ellepot FlexAIR system has helped Alkemade reach their desired productivity goals and given their plants the ideal ‘good start’ – securing reliability in the production with high uniformity and high performance in the plants.
Dutch young-plant producer and leading supplier of perennials Gebr. Alkemade B.V became interested in the integrated Ellepot Propagation System when their previous propagation system caused irregular rooting and foliage growth in the plants. The problems had been resulting in low uniformity and substantial plant loss, and being unable to accept this insecurity, Alkemade decided to make a change and switched to a customized Ellepot Propagation System with two high-capacity Ellepot FlexAIR machines.
The FlexAIR machine and technology is designed to produce pots with a very high air content, and this is beneficial for several reasons. Specifically, the airy pots allow for easy sticking as well as promotion of healthy, natural root growth.
The outer layer of the pot, the specially developed Ellepot paper, is penetrable to the roots, and with air around every pot in the cells of a clean tray, root air pruning ensures the stimulation of secondary and tertiary root growth. The strong and fibrous root systems created in Ellepots result in better nutrient uptake by the plants, bringing about a lush foliage that grows with a matching speed to the root system, providing high uniformity and shorter bench times – traits Alkemade recognizes in their Ellepot-grown young-plants.
